Home - Domain Name Recovery

With new registrations continuing to grow every day, it is becoming more and more difficult to find a good domain name which is available.  Before settling for a less powerful domain name however, first consider your options. You may in fact be able to get the taken domain name you want after all without having to pay extravagant amounts of money.

Domain name recovery is a real 'case by case' game. Every circumstance is different. The first thing we do here at Web IP when engaged by a client to recover a taken domain name is evaluate the 'lay of the land'.

1. Is the domain name an infringement on a trademark you have?

2. Is the domain name breaching a policy? e.g. in the case of the .au space a Registrant must meet the registration policy of having a close or substantial association with the domain name as a minimum.

3. Are they using the domain name, if so what for?

4. Perform a who is check to identify how long they have had the domain name.

5. Would it cause the Registrar financial loss if they were to lose the domain name?

6. When is the domain name next due to expire

….and so on.

Once we have ascertained these points, we are able to begin investigating the best option. Options can include:

1. Domain Acquisition by Negotiation

2. Purchasing via a domain after market website

3. Breach of policy - resulting in domain cancellation

4. Arbitration / Trademark infringement

5. Back order or 'snapback' of the domain name

6. Simply monitoring for change
